DIY Barnwood Wine Rack

MountedIn case you don’t know my hubby and I…we are wine lovers.  I suppose it really started when we visited the land of amazing wine (read: Italy).  I won’t repeat the praises of Italian travel in this article, but you can read all about them on the travel page.  Anyways, we returned from Europe with a love for red wine.  You can imagine our excitement every time we visited the local international grocery store complete with an imported wine section.  But then we introduced to the concept of “The Wine Club”.  We were given a free voucher for Naked Wine and we were hooked.  After receiving our first shipment of wine we quickly realized that we did not have the space to store the aforementioned abundant wine.  As luck would have it, The Hubs recently acquired a few pieces of old barn wood from his dad and was itching to use it.

We decided that it would need to hold a full case with room for any extras that we may pick up from the local winery or that may be gifted to us (this last one doesn’t happen that often, but a girl can dream).  From there we knew that we would need to size it to fit in the little corner of our kitchen.  After that I let Sean take the lead on this project.

Scrub&SandFirst we had to prep the wood by sanding it down to get the old bird poo off, but we tried to keep the gnarled look.  Below are the instructions that Sean wrote out for me so if you have questions, just ask 🙂
    •  Two boards at 4 1/2 by 38 inches. This is for the vertical frame.
    •  Three boards at 3 by roughly 24 inches (this will need to match the final width of your rack).  This will be on the front of the rack keeping the wine bottles from falling out.
    •  Six boards at 3 by 22 inches. These are for the shelves and backingCut your wood to the following measurements using a table saw and miter saw.
  1. Sand all sides to remove splinters and rough edges.Nail it upLine it up
  2. Use a brad nailer to nail the rack together.  Attach the shelf pieces to the vertical boards with a 15 in spacing between the shelves to allow your wine bottles enough space to be pulled out of the rack.
  3. Brad nail the back rack pieces in.  These will be used to secure the rack to the wall.MountedSprayseal
  4. Measure and cut the front boards to final length, then brad nail them to the front of the rack.
  5. Use a spray sealant to seal the wood
  6. Mount rack to wall
  7. Load it up with your pretty wine bottles! Loadedup

I am absolutely in love with this thing!barnwood detailBarnwood detail
